You have a future in common use

Celine Condorelli

Origin: Static Issue 04
Content: Text/Images

The Support Structure Phase 3 - Greenham Common Project seeks to redefine the identity of the Greenham Common to explore potential ways in which it could be understood, reinterpreted and relaunched to inspire people to start using it again as a public space. A nuclear base and then the site of women’s peace camps, the common was heavily stigmatized and little remained of its original purpose.  With her text, Celine Condorelli explains the significance of each act developed by Support Structure to promote the shared use of the Greenham Common. The West Berkshire Council commissioned the Greenham Common Project while Andy Phillips and Jane Rendell provided invaluable help and inspiration.

Support Structure is an evolving collaborative project between architect Celine Condorelli and artist-curator Gavin Wade. Support Structure aims to produce and create a universally adaptable support structure that approaches the specific rather than the generic. Support Structure is an architectural interface. A mini architecture in itself, Support Structure aims to create a space, which is continuously reinvented by its users in relation to its context. Support Structure houses artifacts as well as activities and aids reconsideration of existing spaces as an impulse for future change.

Support Structure has moved and developed through a series of 5 sites across the UK beginning with an existing art site and moving out into other types of public spaces, growing and changing along the way. Support Structure is a cumulative knowledge, and through its learning process absorbs local information and examples from each site and each activity.
