re[a]d scream
From the series Duplicities of the Real

Content: Image/QTVR

Nicola Dale Static 5

“I experience abjection only if an Other has settled in place and stead of what will be ‘me.’ Not at all an other with whom I identify and incorporate, but an Other who precedes and possesses me, and through such possession causes me to be.” Julia Kristeva Powers of Horror

I find the new digital screen at the interface of literature and art compelling since I have to unlearn to rely on the word and logic of language. I also use image-music-text technology, hypertext art, where the narrative has been lost, for example, a QTVR.

re[a]d scream stages the scream of the (dis)possessed whose words are smudged at the far end of language, the memories of the abject.

As the scream is being interacted with and ultimately read, it stages the shift from traditional forms of narrative, now lost in pixels on the new screen, to the possibilities of emerging hypertext(ual) art.

Contributor:

Yvonne Martinsson is a Swedish writer and artist living in Stockholm. She works in web-based  new media that enables her to explore new forms of narrative, or lack thereof. Recurrent themes in her work are language, desire and love. She interprets them as the basis for constructing our subjectivity, which is enhanced, questioned, and perhaps undermined by the remixability offered by digital technologies.
Yvonne Martinsson holds a PhD degree in English literature from the University of Stockholm. She is the author of Eroticism, Ethics and Reading: Angela Carter in Dialogue with Roland Barthes (Almqvist & Wiksell International, 1996). Her work has been exhibited in Germany (Violence Online Festival, 2003; IFjord - Nordic Net Art, 2004; WitchCraft, 2004) and in Finland (Live Herring, 2005).
