Maps have long been a source of inspiration and in many instances additional raw material. Maps are made easier to use by the imposition of a grid, enabling us to read co-ordinates and determine location relative to object. Within our digital culture, the reliance on the grid is paramount…

Built in obsolescence the work utilises numerous items of redundant  “new” technology that are disassembled and arranged to create dystopian cityscapes. The components were rearranged throughout the duration of the project enabling 95% of potential Landfill to be recycled back into use.

I use a variety of art forms to express these views: installation, sculpture, film and performance have all been used to generate new work that has a central focus on the environment while commenting on other aspects of society…

There is something counterintuitive about a society that uses the value of gold as the benchmark for measuring wealth, throwing away small amounts of the stuff because it is too expensive to extract from the old technology…

Contributor:

Paul Matosic is an artist based in the East Midlands, England. Throughout his career that spans over twenty-five years, he has explored issues about consumerism and environment focusing on the throw away culture that seems endemic in the West.

Paul Matosic works with installation sculpture and film often within a social context. Some projects have evolved out of “performative walks” that may be seen as both information gathering exercises and evolving out of consultation, direct contact with the public, etc. All these works have an interconnectivity enabling them to combine and recombine and evolve, introducing new elements both in terms of medium and intent.

He has shown his work at numerous regional, national and international exhibitions. Most recently his work was exhibited in Nottingham (A+B=CC(an), Bonington Gallery, 2007); Chicago (Pathogeographies, 400 gallery Chicago, 2007); Londonderry (Multiplicity,Context Gallery, 2006); Ontario (Ex Industria, Kitchener, 2005).
